Straight: Good for a few laughs
Rating: 2 out of 5*
Starring: Vinay Pathak, Gul Panag, Siddharth Makkar, Anuj Choudhary and Rasik Dave and Ketki Dave.
Director: Parvati Balgopalan
Settled in London Pinu Patel (Vinay Pathak) is a successful restaurateur who runs an Indian restaurant. But the 30 crossed simple at heart bloke is still a virgin. His foster brother Rajat (Sid Makkar), however is a complete opposite of him and is a confident and extroverted young man. A wannabe stand up comic artist (Anuj) lands up at Pinu’s restaurant hoping for a job but Pinu hires him instead as a cook who can also do a stand up comic act to entertain the hotel patrons. Also, the very same day Pinu hires Renu (Gul) as his hotel’s cashier. These two new recruits change things for the better for Pinu as his business starts soaring. The three now become very good friends and start hanging out together. But certain situations then lead to make Pinu believe that he may actually be having Gay leanings. His foster brother Rajat advises him to have a sexual romp with hot woman but all one thing leads to another and the chaos it all leads to forms the rest of the film where Pinu has to struggle finding the woman of his dreams as well as come clean on his sexuality.
The wafer thin plot of the film appears stretched after a point of time. Agreed the film generates a few laughs here and there but what irritates you in the feeling of déjà vu that Vinay Pathak has begun to generate while watching him on screen nowadays. It’s the same act he has been putting up in his recent films such as Dasvidaniya and Oh My God the basic good at heart simpleton with a heart of gold who is always misunderstood by others. The film’s production values are of high standards and the locales of London have been captured very well too.
Parvati Balgopalan who gave us the delightful romantic comedy Rules-Pyar Ka Superhit Formula in her second outing does a decent job. She efficiently handles the comic portions and kept the narrative engaging. The peppy soundtrack of the film adds fun to the proceedings.
Like mentioned above, Vinay though puts in a sincere effort, disappoints as there is no novelty in his performance. The only new thing well he manages to smooch Gul Panag. Gul looks extremely hot and puts in a good performance. Newcomer Anuj Choudhary is likeable. Siddharth Makkar is good as well. Real life couple Rasik and Ketki Dave, together perhaps for the first time in a Hindi film, are fun to watch.
Straight is not another Dostana but what could have been an enjoyable fare gets a little drab because of Pathak. There have been fights in B-Town in the recent months and the Aamir vs Shah Rukh and Salman vs SRK battles have caught a lot of attention.
But there have been unusual friendships too, like between the likes of Sallu-Aamir and Akshay-Aamir.
Now the buzz is that Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan have been bonding big time.
The actors who played brothers might have had some problems while making the ‘Krazzy 4’ song but that’s a thing of the past now.
The ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ actor and King Khan have been catching up a lot these days.
Hrithik is a permanent fixture at Mannat and he and wife Sussanne have been at most parties at King Khan’s home.
Not only that, they even partied together when they were in Dubai last year for the opening of Atlantis. SRK was at Roshan Jr’s home a few nights ago.
A source said, “It was no occasion as such, just a casual affair. SRK was there for quite a while. Later in the night, the host and the guests decided to play dumb charades of Hollywood flicks. The guests were divided into two teams of Hrithik and Shah Rukh. Both sides did their bit of miming and SRK’s team was declared to be the winner.”
They manage to keep the dosti going in spite of their busy schedules.
The source added, “Though Hrithik is extremely busy with his home production Kites, he is still taking time out to catch up with SRK. A few weeks ago, the duo was even spotted chilling out together.”
But this is not the first time that the two have bonded. It has happened in the past too.
“In 2006 when ‘Krrish’ had released, Hrithik had a special screening for Shah Rukh to garner his frank opinion. Later, when Hrithik was in London to promote the film, SRK (who was holidaying there) had hosted a special dinner for him.
B-Town is slowly getting a whiff of the SRK-Hrithik bonding. Both stars refrain from talking about each other. Hrithik is known for being extremely guarded while SRK has not yet given his reply to Aamir’s recent outbursts against him.”
This sure is one special yaari. We just hope it stands the test of time, unlike all other crumbling friendships in B-Town.
“There were no apprehensions. Actors who play romantic heroes in most of the films don’t get apprehensive before taking another such project; so why should I?” he said.
Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, Ek is a remake of Telugu film Athadu and also stars southern star Shriya Saran.
“Though I also did such a role in Bichhoo, this one is a far more stylised version of a professional killer. In fact I was very excited when I saw the southern version of Ek and said yes to the role,” said Bobby.
Known for his action image, the 39-year-old said that the action sequences in the film were something to look out for. “The USP of the film is its action. It has been shot and choreographed very well and it will offer amazing action sequences to all action fans in the country. They’ll love it,” he said.
Bobby shrugged off media rumours that he jumped off the 14th floor for the film. “My jump has been exaggerated in the media. I jumped only from the seventh floor, not 14th -though that was also scary enough,” he laughed.
Bobby, who was last seen in Dostana with short cropped hair, was excited about his new look in Ek.
“I sport a straightened hair look in the film. It’s ironic that my hair has been straightened despite my constant advice to people that one should not get them straightened at all as it spoils your hair,” the actor said.
The film has Nana Patekar playing a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inspector and Bobby is all praise for the 58-year-old’s energy levels. “Nana is a great guy. He is so agile and active. In fact, for his age, he is so fit and I really admire him for that,” he said.
Apparently Nana almost always surprised the unit members with his energetic sprints and his rigorous gym sessions. But Bobby too is known for his fit physique. What’s the secret behind that?
“As far as my physical regime is concerned, I just do my usual workout including a bit of cardio. I don’t work very specifically on my body for any one film,” the actor said.
Asked if he also planned to venture into direction like his elder brother Sunny, he said: “I don’t know. I can’t foresee the future. It’s a dream of every actor to direct a film some day, but who knows.”
Bobby’s future projects include Cheers - Celebrate Life, Roshan, Formula No.44 and Gangs of London.
A FedEx cargo plane has crashed on landing at Tokyo's international airport.
The plane, on a regular flight from Guangzhou, China, burst into a ball of flame killing the pilot and co-pilot on board.
The plane, which was landing despite high winds, appeared to bounce off the runway.
Narita Airport's firefighters and rescuers immediately swarmed on to the plane. The pilot and co-pilot - the only people on board - were pulled from the cockpit and taken to hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.
National broadcaster NHK identified them as 54-year-old
The longer of Narita's two runways remained closed with all incoming flights diverted.
Unusually strong winds of up to 47mph were blowing at the time, but airport officials said it was too early to say whether the strong winds had caused the crash.
News reports said the plane was an MD-11, a wide-body airliner built by McDonnell Douglas and based on the DC-10
